Deciding between the Ghost FX Filter and Handheld Ripple FX Filter? We compare their unique effects, size options, and best uses so you can pick the right creative filter for your photography or video.
Quick Answer
Choose the Ghost FX Filter if you want to simulate long-exposure motion blur or ghosting in-camera. Choose the Handheld Ripple FX Filter if you prefer handheld organic ripple effects that you can move across the frame.
Effect Type: Motion Blur vs Organic Ripples
The Ghost FX Filter recreates the look of a long-exposure shutter lag, producing ghosting, motion blur, and replicating effects directly in your images or footage. It's designed for photographers and filmmakers who want to add a sense of movement or time passing without post-production.
The Handheld Ripple FX Filter creates organic, wave-like distortions that you can physically move across the frame. It's a handheld tool, so you have full control over placement and intensity during the shot.
Size and Style Options
The Ghost FX Filter comes in multiple sizes and strengths, letting you fine-tune the blur intensity. However, specific size and strength options are not listed in the catalog, so you may need to check availability.
The Handheld Ripple FX Filter is available in 100mm and 150mm sizes, with two style choices: CORE and FULL. This gives you clear options to match your lens diameter and desired ripple intensity.
Workflow Differences
The Ghost FX Filter mounts to your lens like a standard filter, making it easy to use with any setup. It's a set-and-forget effect that works continuously.
The Handheld Ripple FX Filter is held in front of the lens, allowing you to move it during the exposure for dynamic, shifting effects. This requires more hands-on control but offers greater creative flexibility.
Ghost FX vs Handheld Ripple FX: Tradeoffs
- Ghost FX Filter: Simulates long-exposure ghosting and motion blur. Mounts to lens. Available in multiple sizes and strengths (specific options not listed). Best for consistent, repeatable blur effects. Great for adding a dreamy, time-lapse look to static scenes or portraits.
- Handheld Ripple FX Filter: Creates organic, moving ripple distortions. Handheld, available in 100mm or 150mm, CORE or FULL style. Gives you real-time control over effect placement. Ideal for dynamic, shifting effects that you can animate across the frame.
- Key Tradeoff: Ghost FX is more predictable and hands-off; Handheld Ripple FX is more interactive and variable. Your choice depends on whether you want consistent motion blur or organic, movable ripples. If you want a set-and-forget effect, go Ghost. If you want to play with the effect in real time, go Handheld Ripple.
